Aston Martin Asia Adds Excitement To MSS Round 4

10 July 2008, By Sepang International Circuit

Malaysian Super Series (MSS) enters its penultimate round this weekend at Sepang Circuit with the inclusion of the Aston Martin Cup Asia as a support race and additional excitement for the fans.

“Kota Sasaki, who won the Aston Martin race and the GT300 race in Sepang, will be coming for this round and it should be very exciting for the drivers and the fans,” says Ian Ross Geekie, who is the Aston Martin Cup Asia series director.

Driving for Team Cusco Racing with Tetsuya Yamano in the GT300 class, Sasaki recorded a spectacular weekend for himself at the recent Super GT International Series Malaysia by winning the GT300 race and both Round 3 and 4 of the inaugural Aston Martin Asia Cup. They currently leads the GT300 championship with 41 points.

Round 4 and 5 would, however, would be different for Sasaki as he would be competing around the Sepang Circuit North Track for the first time and facing a very determined Dilantha Malagamuwa, who currently leads the 12-round championship.

In his preview, Geekie said : “The North Circuit, which is 2.7km long with 9 turns, is set to provide close racing between the identical Aston Martin Vantage N24s. Dilantha Malagamuwa is a double MSS Champion and currently leads the Aston Martin Asia Cup Championship by just 3 points from Sasaki.

“However, there is keen competition throughout the field in the world’s only one make Aston Martin series,” he said, adding that the series also features top drivers from Malaysia, Taiwan, Australia, Singapore and the United Kingdom.

It would be a huge test for Dilantha this weekend with his MSS Supercar crown is currently under siege by Malaysian Wira Dani Daim, who enters the penultimate round this weekend with a 12 point-advantage over the two-time champion. Wira Dani has 95 points against Dilantha’s 83.

In the Supercar Championship, Boy Wong Yew Choong can secure both the 2000cc Supersaloon Championship and the 1600cc Supersixteen Championship if all results go into his favour. With 110 points, Boy had a massive 41-point advantage over second-placed Eddie Lew, who has 69 points.

Seeking this third consecutive crown in the Supersixteen Championship, Boy has a total haul of 70 points and a 10-point advantage over Singaporean Ian Lee. If Boy can manage a double victory and a maximum of 40 points, the title battle could just be over if his closest rivals all failed to manage good results.

This weekend would also feature the penultimate round of the bike competitions – the Superbike Championship, the Supersport Championship, the 135cc Production Bike Championship, the Kawasaki Cup and the Naza Bikerz Cup.

The final round of the bike competitions would be incorporated as support races at the Malaysian World Motorcycle Grand Prix, which would be held from October 17 to 19.
