Brent Odgers Set to Seal Third MSS Crown This Weekend

07 July 2008, By Sepang International Circuit

MALAYSIAN SUPER SERIES - PREVIEW ROUND 4

Malaysian Super Series 2008 reaches its penultimate round at Sepang Circuit this weekend with Australian Brent Odgers going into Round 4 with an opportunity to secure his Superbike crown with a round to spare.

Overall Champion last year and in 2003, the Msportsbike Pineapple Motorsports rider has 141 points and a healthy 55-point advantage over Malaysian Ahmad Zamani Baharuddin, who has 86 points.

"Yes, he can win the title this weekend. He had been in great form this season; but I will do my very best to win Round 4 and delay his celebrations," says Ahmad Zamani of Kawasaki AFY Racing Team, who missed
Round 2 to compete in the Asian Grand Prix.

Like Brent, others like Boy Wong and Mohd Syahnas Shahidan could also have an early celebration this weekend; wrapping up the title challenge in the 2000cc Supersaloon Championship and the 600cc Supersports Championship.

Barring any major upsets, Syahnas, a former Asian Grand Prix rider, is expected to join Odgers in the victory celebrations on Sunday (July 13). With a perfect record of six wins from the previous three rounds, Syahnas holds a 70-point advantage over his closest rival, Italian Massimo Nanni.

Winner of the 1600cc Supersixteen title, Boy is on course for a double crown this year as the Type R Racing driver is leading both the Supersixteen and Supersaloon championship.

While his lead in the Supersaloon Championship is massive with an advantage of 41 points over defending champion Eddie Lew, who has 69 points against Boy's 110, his lead in the Supersixteen Championship is
merely 10 points over second placed Ian Lee of Singapore.

With two races and a maximum of 40 points to be won at each round, the battle between Boy and Ian in the 1600cc should be extended to the final round of the car competition, which will be run as support races at the A1GP Malaysia in November.

Based on past years experience, the Supersixteen, Supersaloon and Supercar competitions running together at the A1GP, Boy would not want to take any chances but to confirm one of the titles at Round 4 to accomplish his pre-season target.

Likewise, the battle for the Supercar crown is expected to go to the wire to Round 5 with Malaysian Wira Dani Daim having a massive task at hand in holding off the challenge from Sri Lankan Dilantha Malagamuwa and Mok Weng Sun of Singapore.

After three rounds, Wira Dani has 95 points and a slim eight-point advantage of two-time Supercar champion Dilantha Malagamuwa of Sri Lanka, who has 83 points with two more rounds to go.

With a maximum of 80 points still to play from the remaining two rounds, third-placed Mok Weng Sun of Singapore and Tunku Hammam Sulong, who have 77 and 63 points respectively, are also still in the running for the overall crown and deny both Wira Dani and Dilantha.

With Aston Martin Asia Cup included in this weekend's programme, Round 4 which would feature both the bike and car competitions had been extended as a three-day programme, beginning from Friday (July 11).
