Formula Geely China Makes Debut In Mss, Invites Malaysian Drivers

PREVIEW MALAYSIAN SUPER SERIES – ROUND 2The new China’s Formula Geely is coming to Malaysia and will be making its debut at the Malaysian Super Series Round 2 at Sepang Circuit this weekend. Introduced last year as an effort by the organizers to unearth new talents among the Chinese, the race in Sepang, however, would be open to any interested Malaysian drivers to feel the excitement of the new single seater race machine, powered by a 1.8-litre Formula Geely engine.
“We already have 16 confirmed drivers. But, we are also offering seats for any interested Malaysian drivers. The fee is RM15,000 and you only need to bring yourself, your racing helmet and racing suits; and of course, your racing license,” says event coordinator Gordon Goh, adding that the organizers had prepared 22 cars for the race. “It is fun and exciting and we strongly believe that this new series would grow into a prominent series within the next few years,” said Goh, adding that interested drivers can contact him personally at 012-3324530. “Alternatively, you can also contact SIC Events Manager Mr Kumar at the circuit. He would be able to help you as well,” said Goh, adding the race in Sepang would be the second round of the 2008 Formula Geely, which would run in seven rounds this year. “We had the first round in Zhuhai and now in Sepang for Round 2. Round 3 will be in Chengdu in July, Round 4 in Shanghai; Round 5 in Beijing and Round 6 will be back in Zhuhai. The final round will be in Macau,” he said. Goh thanked SIC for incorporating the race in its MSS schedule; adding that the team looked forward to make the move as a permanent arrangement as part of efforts by both parties for further promote motorsports in the region. Explaining the move further, SIC Events and Operations Manager, Kumarasamy Chellapan said that the move was also aimed at increasing the boost Sepang’s image as the hub for motorsports in the region and further utilization of the circuit. “We hope to bring more new regional racing series in Sepang to promote motorsports in the region and provide cheaper avenues for local drivers to compete internationally. The more international races come here in Sepang, the more opportunities for them to compete against top international drivers and at a cheaper cost,” said Kumar, adding that he could be contacted via e-mail at kumar@malaysiangp.com.my or at 03-87782240. Apart from the new Formula Geely, the race this weekend would also feature the second round of the MSS car championships – Supercar, Supersaloon, Supersixteen and the Hong Kong Classic Car Series. Malaysian Wira Dani Daim leads the Supercar Championship over defending champion Dilantha Malagamuwa of Sri Lanka. Boy Wong Yew Choong leads both the 2000cc Supersaloon Championship and the 1600cc Supersixteen Championship. Round 2 for the biking championships – Superbike, Supersports, 135cc Production Bike, Kawasaki Cup and the Bikerz Cup – would be held on May 24 and 25.
