History Created With The Flagging Off Of The Inaugural S1K Race

06 June 2009, By SIC

Flagged off by Dato’ Azman Yahya president of Motorsport Association Of Malaysia, the Sepang 1000km (S1K) race went off with 56 cars on the grid. Car 16 of Team Tung Chun Racing from Class 2 failed to reach the rolling start when it stalled right after rolling off from the starting grid.

The incident promoted car number 36 of team HPC Kegani to second spot and along with Team Type R Racing 21 dominated the first race 20 laps of the race which was completed 54:19.771.

Team R3 Proton Satria Neo competition number  12 stalled before turn of lap 15 almost a repeat of their last year’s attempt in Millennium Merdeka Endurance (MME) race.

The Sepang 1000km race is a spinoff from the successful MME race designed for particularly the teams in Class B and C of MME.

“This provides a bigger chance to all that wanted to join the MME but could not enter because of the limited number allocated for the classes,” said SIC chief executive officer Ahmad Razlan Ahmad Razali.

He added that to make the race not only closer but more affordable, an official tyre was chosen for the race.

Among the famous drivers that enter the race is A1 GP driver Aaron Lim, Kart racer James Veerapan and Fadzil Alang.

With 56 teams signed up, 32 in Class 1 and 24 in Class 2, this race promises to be close and exciting endurance race as the cars have about to have the same power output.

With a minimum of two drivers and a maximum of four drivers to a car, the first team that completes 182 laps (approximately 1008km) of the 5.543km track will be announced the winner on race day today.

The race is estimated to finish tonight and prize giving is scheduled at 9pm.
