Boy Wong Confirms Supersixteen Title In Anti Climax Decider
A1GP MALAYSIA 2008/2009– SUPPORT RACES
Two-time Malaysian Super Series (MSS) Supersixteen champion Boy Wong Yew Choong secured his third successive title in an unexpected anti-climax decider after his closest rival Ramesh Subramaniam went out in the formation lap of the opening race at Sepang Circuit.
Needing to beat Boy to take the championship battle to the final race tomorrow, Ramesh’s charge was halted by a broken fuel distributor which his Honda Civic EK9 machine encountered after starting the formation lap.
Finishing seventh in the battle of the 1600cc machine, Boy, who had already secured the sub-2000cc Supersaloon title, collected four points to take his total haul of the season to 117 with Ramesh remained on 81 points and on second in the overall standings.
Run as one of the support races for the A1GP Malaysia 2008/09, the Supersixteen race was run together with the Supersaloon and Supercar competitors, which saw Singaporean Mok Weng Sun winning the opening Race 1. Race 2 would be held tomorrow to decide the winner for the season-closure Round 5.
The race was won by Perajun Krishnan in an impressive time of 23 minutes 36.899 seconds with Kok Pak Chiang taking second place and moving to fourth in the overall standings with 67 points.
“What can I say … it’s all over. I have the bird in the hand and it just flew away,” said Ramesh, who naturally fancied his chances as Boy was using a borrowed race car that was hurriedly set up yesterday for the race.
Commenting on his win, Boy said he was very lucky because the power of his borrowed Honda Civic EK9 was not to his satisfaction and that he had expected Ramesh to top the race today.
“Luck was with me and I am happy to be the first double winner in the MSS. I don’t know about next season. Hopefully, I could secure enough sponsors to defend both titles in 2009,” said Boy, in reference to the dismantling of the Type Racing Team after their disastrous outing at the Merdeka Millennium Endurance last year.
Clocking 22 minutes 18.684 seconds around the 5.543-km circuit to win the overall race and the Supercar category, Weng Sun’s victory effectively denied an early celebration for Malaysian Wira Dani Daim, who would now needs five more points to win his first ever MSS crown.
Finishing second for the opening race, Wira Dani now has 142 points and a 15-point advantage over Weng Sun, who has 127 points. The final race tomorrow offers a maximum of 20 points for grabs.
The opening race for the Supersaloon category was won by Sharjihan Mohd Ghouse, who now moved to second in the overall standings with 70 points. Lai Wee Sing, who recently won Sepang Drag Battle overall crown was second and Erwan Azizi was third.
Launched in 2002, the MSS is Malaysia’s national championship for track racing and pits the best of Malaysian racers against top international drivers in a five-round championship with the final round traditionally organized as support races for the A1GP Malaysian round.
The A1GP Malaysia 2008/09 race is promoted by Carbon Worldwide, which is also responsible for all the commercial arrangements for the event. SIC is responsible for the race management of the main race as well as the support races.
