In recent years, there has been an establishment of a number of very exciting race series for both professional and amateur drivers. Thus, one cannot deny the existence of motorsports in the country, which started taking roots 70 years ago. However, motorsports has been through a roller coaster ride ever since and the country has only managed to produce a handful of world class racers and nothing more to boost sports tourism through motorsports.
Thus, in realizing such need, Sepang International Circuit has aggressively begun to boost motorsports activities in the country and is on its way to become the motorsports hub of the entire region. From Go-Karting, Motorcross, 4X4 and support races to grand events like the Formula 1 Grand Prix, Motorcycle Grand Prix and Japan Grand Touring Championships; SIC is now introducing another sporting event for the third year in the running; the "Malaysian Super Series Championship."
The Malaysian Super Series Championship (MSS) is designed to spur the development of the Malaysian Motorsports industry in which it hopes to produce professional world-class racers. The concept basically moulds around technological innovations and enhancement that can induce as well as sustain the growth of talented racers in Malaysia, and uphold the growth of the motorsports industry by utilizing resources within the industry and institution of higher learning. MSS will further enhance sports tourism by encouraging sponsorship, advertising, and influencing policies and regulations.
Generally, the establishment and development of the Malaysian Super Series Championship shall deliver a 'sporting event' of prestige standards aiming for the following:
- Encourage participation amongst the youth and heighten the awareness of motorsports
- Promote healthier values and professionalism in motorsports
- Provide racing events for local drivers
- Expand the races regionally
- Establish an infrastructure for professional training and evolution programs to produce world class racers
- Influence changes in policies and regulations for motorsports advancement
